Review :: Ojon's Best of Damage Reserve Kit

Wed, 11/16/2011 - 12:36PM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

If I ever had a hair profile status, it would read the following:

"I'm a fiery redhead, living life on the wild side, who prefers to have a little fun with being a blonde, yet also finds time to relax every 3-4 months."

Yes, I know, it's a dangerous combination, the coloring and relaxing, but I'm a gambler. Recently I've experienced some breakage, nothing too major, but still, I wanted to address the issue. I visited my local ULTA and picked up Ojon's Best of Damage Reserve Kit. Now, I've never used Ojon products before, but I've heard plenty about the brand. Recently, GAWJUS songstress, Melanie Fiona mentioned in an interview with Fashion Bomb TV that she uses Ojon products to nourish her lovely locks. I thought I'd give it a try and for only $39 for the complete kit including: Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo (8.5 oz), Damage Reverse Restorative Conditioner (8.5 oz) and the Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment (1.7 oz) it was a sweet bargain.

For those who aren't familiar with the brand, here's a little background info: It's a natural and organic line of naturally derived ingredients from the tropical rain forest in Central America. Ojon's secret to beautiful hair, is a rich palm nut oil extracted from the tropical tree. This unique tree grows only in the rain forest of the Mosquitia region of Central America. Ojon instantly hydrates and improves the condition of damaged, color-treated or processed hair without weighing it down. Fortifying, rebuilding and nourishing, it leaves hair extraordinarily shiny, silky and manageable. Ideal for dry, dull, damaged, natural or chemically-treated hair.

Formulated WITHOUT
Parabens
Synthetic Fragrance
Synthetic Dye
Formaldehyde Donor
Phthalates
Triclosan
DEA,
PABA
Paraffin
Petrolatum/Mineral oil

According to the kit, the treatments which are fortified with pure Ojon oil, are suppose to instantly mend and strengthen my hair against breakage. So, as the kit instructed, I applied the Damage Reverse Restorative Hair Treatment to my scalp, massage it in and combed it through and let sit for 20 minutes. Next, I shampooed with the Damage Reverse Restorative Shampoo and followed up with the Damage Reverse Restorative Conditioner.

So here are the results...

I must admit that after I shampooed my hair, it didn't feel as silky as it does when I use Shea Moisture's Organic Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo , but it felt very soft and pumped up the volume in my hair and added a lot of body to it. When I walk, my hair just flows and bounces and I LOVE that!

Two thumbs up!

Ojon products are available at Sephora, ULTA and at Ojon.com.

Sweet Thang :: NEW Flushed Cheeks Tutorial

Tue, 10/18/2011 - 10:18AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

As mentioned in our Keeping Up With The Joneses :: Fall 2011 Beauty Trends post, flushed cheeks are a top trend for this fall season. If you take a look at any of the NYFW footage/photos or flip through any of your favorite beauty/fashion magazines you're sure to see this trend.

Not only does this look strengthen your cheek bones, but it also provides a very youthful, feminine and sun-kissed look with minimal effort. Check out my NEW tutorial on how to achieve this look:

This look is very and sweet look. Remember, for a subtle look, just use a pink, peach or coral blush and apply to the apples of your cheeks. For a more dramatic look, apply bronzer in a c-shape in the crease of your cheeks OR you could do both. To make the look even more feminine, pair it up with a peachy, pale pink or nude lipstick

Here are some blushes I recommend: Lorac's Blush/Bronzer Duo in Hot Flash, Stila's Custom Color Blush, and Lorac's Baked Matte Satin Blush in Exposed.

How Red Should I Go?? My Virtual Hair Makeover

Wed, 08/10/2011 - 10:14AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

I have been a redhead since birth...well maybe not since birth, I didn't start to grow hair until the age of 2, but you get the picture. In middle and high school they used to call my sister and I the "redhead twins". We were the "freckled face red haired girl[s]", like in that Pippi Longstocking song.

Over the last three years, I've been having a lot fun being a blonde, but I'm ready to change it up for Fall. I want to stick with red, but try a more flaming shade. My natural hair color is a reddish-brown hue, I want to add more zest with either copper, burgundy or a rust color, but of course I need to choose a color that compliments my complexion, so the question is, how red should I go??

A burgundy red like Sharon Osbourne? Christina Hendricks & Angie Everheart's carrot red? Or maybe something bold like Rihanna's tomato red? I visited www.dailyglow.com for a virtual makeover, to test out some colors. Here are my three favs:

Light Auburn, Medium Auburn or Pillarbox Red? Which do you like the best?

Feeling Smurfy :: Lady Lips the Blues

Wed, 08/10/2011 - 10:07AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -
The Smurfs in 3D hit the big screen, last Friday and although I loved watching the Smurfs growing up, I can't say I was too excited about hearing about the movie...sometimes I think these production companies should just let old time favorites be. Needless to say I still haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm not opposed to watching it on TV one day.

My favorite character on the cartoon was Smurfette, she was all things prissy and FABULOUS -- with her flirty lashes and white heels.

Before I saw the pics of the movie preview, I really thought Katy Perry, the voice behind Smurfette in the movie was going to do something outrageous with the color blue, but she left her trademark blue wig and opted for a Smurfette sequin dress.
Anyway, all the Smurf hype had me stuck on the color blue. Out of all the colors in my makeup kit, I LOVE playing with blue. So I wanted to mess around and do something different with my favorite hue -- I've done blue eyeshadow and blue eyeliner, but never blue lips!

I've seen this look rocked fashionably by Amber Rose so I thought I would give it a try. Unfortunately, none of the stores I visited carry blue lipstick so I had to get creative. I first applied concealer to my lips then applied a blue cream/gel eyeliner (I don't recommend doing this, but I'm reckless) and finally clear lip gloss (first pic in the collage above).

If you're looking for blue lipstick, to save you the trouble, below are some cosmetic lines where you find it:

The Breakup Makeover :: Erase, Replace, Embrace, New Face

Tue, 07/19/2011 - 12:11PM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

So the big news over the blogospere has been the news about Jennifer Lopez and her hubby, Marc Anthony's entrance into “Splitsville”. I must admit, I was caught completely off guard, after hearing about it myself. After her numerous public breakups and divorces, I really thought that JLo had it right this time, but evidently, I was mistaken.

I truly hate hearing about couples breaking up, because let’s face it, breaking up sucks! The whole process of grieving and getting over can be overbearing. I remember I was always told to burn sage to drive out negative energy, after a breakup and now in the era of divorce parties, breaking up can actually be celebrated as starting a new chapter. So rather than sob your heart out and over-indulge in boxes of chocolate, give yourself a breakup makeover!

You’ve been crying your heart out and soaking your pillow every night and now, you’ve been greeted with red, puffy eyes.

The Remedy: Apply cucumber slices or cold tea bags to your eyes. The coolness reduces circulation, but the tea actually has a slightly astringent (tissue-shrinking) effect as well.

High Impact Lashes Set - $34
What it does:
Go for bold with High Impact Mascara, which kicks up the volume of each and every lash for an eye-opening effect. All About Eyes Serum de-puffs and helps minimize fine lines while tugless Take The Day Off Makeup Remover takes it all off gently at the end of the day.

This set contains:
- 0.28 oz High Impact Mascara in Black
- 1 oz Take the Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips
- 0.17 oz All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye Massage
- pink zippered cosmetic bag

Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask
What it is:
A brightening at-home eye treatment.

What it is formulated to do:
Like an energy drink for your eyes, Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Eye Mask is 'eye-deal' for those who want to fake a full eight hours sleep. With three forms of glow-inducing oxygenating ingredients, antioxidant vitamin C, and puff-pummeling cucumber extract, it will brighten, de-puff, and hydrate eyes in 15 minutes flat.

What else you need to know:
The innovative single treatment packaging has twin-chambers. One chamber holds the two freeze-dried marine collagen eye masks (meaning all minerals are locked into the masks without added preservatives in their most active states). The other compartment contains proprietary activating fluid. The packaging is sealed to be air tight—meaning the pads and liquid activator are in their purest form until the customer activates the masks and peels back the packaging. It contains four dual treatment masks good for one month's supply.

The stress of the breakup is starting to show on your face. Your skin is starting to lack-luster, so it’s time to get rid of the dead-weight skin.

The Remedy: Make your own exfoliating facial scrub with brown sugar, honey and lemon juice. The brown sugar moisturizes and rejuvenates skin as it gently exfoliates and removes dead skin cells; Honey kills germs, clean pores and reduces swelling and inflammation. Lemon helps clear clogged pores, reduces the size of pores and prevents and cures blackheads.

Clean Scene™ Gaga for Glow™ Gentle Facial Scrub - $20

What it is:
A gentle scrub that gets rid of dull, dead skin for a super smooth complexion.

What it is formulated to do:
Dismiss Dullness! This exfoliating essential deep-cleans to minimize the appearance of pores as it frees skin of excess oil, leaving a healthy glow. Get scrubbing three times a week for seriously silky results.

Sugar Face Polish - $55
What it is:
A nourishing, exfoliating mask that refines and brightens the skin, instantly revealing a radiant complexion.

What it is formulated to do:
This innovative formula is enriched with revitalizing brown sugar and antioxidant-rich wild strawberries, which work together to gently dissolve dead skin cells and reveal perfectly nourished skin. It also includes hydrating seed oils that leave the skin soft and supple. An invigorating aroma from a natural blend of citrus oils further enhances the experience of using Sugar Face Polish. The formula is recommended for all skin types and will not sting or cause redness.

You’ve been moping around and neglected your lips. I’m sure, the last thing on your mind is puckering up to someone, but you never know when that heartbreaker may come crawling back and besides, you can’t let one monkey stop the show!

Fabulips ($74 Value)

What it is:
A routine to leave your lips full, healthy, and beautiful.

What it is formulated to do:
It's a facial for your lips! Designed to recreate Bliss Spa's popular and unique fabulips treatment, this pout-perfecting kit cleans, exfoliates, plumps, and softens lips.

- 0.5 oz Fabulips Sugar Lip Scrub
- 0.06 oz Fabulips Instant Lip Plumper 4.50
No matter where you’re going, either the laundry mat or a night out on town, throw on M.A.C.’s Ruby Woo lipstick and you will definitely get you noticed and not to mention, you’ll feel like a million bucks.

Colour plus texture for the lips. Stands out on the runway. Simmers on the street! What made M·A·C famous. - $14.50

Getting Beautified :: Vanity Table Inspiration

Tue, 07/12/2011 - 12:12PM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

When it comes to where I prep and primp and where I keep my beauty essentials (hair accessories/products, makeup, and fragrances), lighting is key, so my bathroom is my vanity space, where I get beautified. Ideally, I would like to go Hollywood chic and have a vanity table somewhere else, other than the bathroom. A few months ago, I remember reading a post from The Decorista featuring glamorous vanities and primp stations.

This has all inspired me to channel my inner decorista and Marilyn Monroe to get beautified in style.

Thought I would share some helpful tips when putting together a vanity space:

Must-haves: table or desk, large mirror, lamp and an organizer for your products and accessories.
Your vanity space is your beauty sanctuary. Make sure you set it up in a comfy and isolated area.
The proper lighting is essential for your vanity space. You want to make sure you have bright lighting at your station or natural lighting by a window.

Moment of Clarity Using African Black Soap

Thu, 07/07/2011 - 10:58AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

I had been hearing about the wonders of African black soap for while -- how it works miracles on oily/acne prone skin and after months of procrastinating, thanks to a street vendor in my neighborhood, I was finally able to try it. I purchased a bar of DuDu Osun's African Black Soap for $5.

I started using it on Monday and immediately I could see the benefits. When using my regular cleanser, I would either have to wipe my face first or use a toner afterwards to remove my makeup, but with the black soap, it removes all the product from my face, and has it feeling fresh and clean. Also, usually around this time, I start to notice a few break outs or two, but since I've been using the black soap, I haven't noticed any acne. Finally, I've noticed that it has helped brighten my skin, giving me a natural glow!

Two things worth mentioning is that it be a little messy, I would suggest storing it in one of those plastic soap containers. Also, it has a strong fragrance -- smells like cologne if you ask me, which can be good or bad, depending on the individual.

Here are some added benefits of using black soap (via benefitofnet.com):

1.Helps to remove scars caused by acne.
Since acne is not caused by dirt, but due to the release of excessive oils within the skin, the soap cannot remove acne. But use of African black soap helps to remove scars cause due to acne.

2.Helps to remove skin irritations.
Use of black soap helps to remove skin irritations like rashes.

3.Suitable for all skin types.
Black soap can be used for the treatment of problems on all types of skin including the dry and rough, oily and moderate skins.

4.Beneficial for skin diseases.
Black soap is very beneficial for reducing the discomforts that are associated with skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema

5.Helps in removing make-up.
Black soap not only cures skin problems but can also be used as a perfect cleanser for removing make up. It removes every bit of chemicals that can spoil the skin and help to make it clean and fresh.

6.Delays ageing on the skin.
Regular use of black soap helps to remove facial lines that are mostly early signs of ageing. Thus black soap can be used to delay ageing of skin.

7.Benefits to oily skin.
Regular use of black soap helps to remove extra oils form the skin. It is thus useful in preventing the formation of pimples and other problems associated with oily skin.

8.Benefits to the hair.
Black soap can be used for cleaning of hair. After cleaning use your regular conditioner for shiny lustrous beautiful hair.

Where to purchase black soap:

DuDu Osun's Black Soap can be purchased online through Amazon or Afrikan Republic

Shea Moisture's Organic African Black Soap Facial Regime is available at Target and Walgreen's

If I missed a brand, please feel free to add it by responding. Also, if you have tried black soap, let me know how its worked for you.

July 4th Pin Up Girl Inspired Look

Thu, 07/07/2011 - 10:55AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

Independence Day is this upcoming Monday, and I'm sure a lot of us will be celebrating with cook outs, parties and/or viewing the fireworks to show our patriotism. I was really thinking hard about a look for the 4th of July...maybe something funky like red, white and blue on the eyes or blue smokey eye and red lips or even blue lips, but then I thought about it, nothing is more patriotic than the retro pinup girl look.

Pin up models like, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable and Jane Russell and work from artists such as Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren and George Petty were ever present in the lockers of the G.I.'s during World War II.

It's a very sexy, yet simple look. Here's how I achieved the look:

- Applied a warm taupe shadow on my eyelid.
- Brown eyeshadow in the crease.
- Black eyeliner was a staple during that time, so it's a must for the look. I applied a thick line gel/cream black eyeliner.
- White eyeliner on the waterline. Remember wearing white eyeliner helps open your eyes.
- Black eyeshadow along the lower lash line
- I wanted the big flirty lashes so I applied faux lashes.
- I wanted rosey cheeks so I used Laura Mercier's blush in Spiced Cider.
- Finally finished up with the classic pinup girl red lips. I used L'Oreal Infalliable Le Rouge in Refined Ruby. This one of my favorite lipstick brands because it's very hydrating, so it keeps your lips moist without drying them.

Hope you all have a safe wonderful 4th!

Pretty in Pink :: Nicki Minaj 'Pink Sunday'

Thu, 07/07/2011 - 10:52AM by Melissa Rich 0 Comments -

This past Sunday, Nicki Minaj was in DC for her "I Am Still Music" tour. I didn't attend the concert, but I was at the after party - PINK SUNDAY, presented by Dave & Ray Ent. & The Standard Events.

Nicki Minaj

Dave (Dave & Ray Ent.), Omari (The Standard Events), Ray (Dave & Ray Ent.)

Lovely ladies in pink
Pink Hair

Even a pink car

I decided to go along with the theme and wear pink (or as I like to say it "pank" my favorite color)...well fuchsia, close enough. Fuchsia is not a color I often rock, so I needed some inspiration for makeup ideas.

A black smokey or winged eye with a pink nude lip seemed to be the popular trend with fuchsia. I lined my eyes with Maybelline's black gel liner, applied a bubble gum pink blush, Bobbi Browns blush in pale pink, and LORAC's Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick in Muse to my lips. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that gloss!
